Q. Favorite colors / prints?

Surprisingly, I have been drawn to faded/washed out floral colors/prints lately. Something about this curtain in my friend Jen's closet is so cozy and feminine. I also love these sheets and am inspired to somehow work florals into our new place.

Q. Visually inspired by..

A visit to J.B. Blunk's house in Inverness, California. Aside from it being in one of the most dreamy locations and the home of one of my favorite sculptors, practically everything in the house (including the house itself) was made by him. The simplest everyday items like ceramic cups and bowls, wooden plates and stools, cutting boards, you name it– were all made by him. I found it so inspiring I was shaking with excitement. It was kind of like a "DUH!" moment..

Q. Favorite designer(s), artists?

Probably the best combination of the two are my friends Kristin Dickson and Shin Okuda, or Krishin as they say:) Kristin designs a line of clothing called Rowena Sartin and Shin has a handmade furniture collection called Waka Waka. Together, they run Iko Iko, my favorite store in Los Angeles. To me, their work is always somewhere between fine art-meets-function-meets-beauty. I'm kind of obsessed with these new bookends Shin made.

Q. Favorite book / magazine / art piece?

Favorite book of all time (due to cover and content) is Sheila Hicks' Weaving as Metaphor/ Magazines.. always Apartamento and The Gentlewoman because of their photography/styling/content, and most recently Rika/ My favorite art piece is this newly acquired Waka Waka zig zag from Iko Iko. I'm pretty picky about hanging "artwork" in my home, especially paintings and framed things (although I wouldn't mind one of these). I think I am more fond of functional items or objects as art, like this amazing tissue dispenser, these plant hangers, or this towel. I feel like you don't need art when your household items are beautiful, plus you get the benefit of interacting with them every day.

Q. Recent home inspiration / creative idea?

I have forever wanted to take a ceramics class and after visiting the J.B. Blunk house I am determined to make all my own stoneware. I collect so many thrifted ceramics I know exactly what I like– it's so simple, yet for some reason, so hard to find! Ideally I'd make lots of small plates (10" is my ideal size plate), small bowl/cups (that could be used for food or drink), a drip coffee maker, a large crock with lid that fits inside for fermenting things (like sauerkraut and kimchi), and storage containers for leftovers. Instead of paying an arm and a leg for beautiful stoneware, I figure why not make it myself? I found the containers above at a Goodwill, it's shocking retailers don't think to make something similar.

Q. Currently most excited about..

Moving! I am so excited to move from of our current location into a quieter, more central part of our neighborhood. We don't have a car, so it's important to us to be close to a good grocery store due to the cold and rain here in Seattle. I also love moving because it forces you to part with what you don't need and realize what you do. Some things on my dream list are a Miele vacuum, a natural bed, and a cozy couch. I am also really looking forward to turning 30 this year.. I'm making a real effort to be healthier and have discovered so many new recipes and drinks that are both wholesome and delicious, like this date shake (above). ♦

I finally finished my quilt! you may remember its first mention- back in late October. I've worked on it many hours (I'm estimating about 200 total) since then, and I'm in a very mild shock about its finally being done

a few of my favorite squares came from friends who make beautiful things.. most of the knitted squares are from cathy in oregon & several of the felted squares are from monika in scotland. there's also a felted square as well as many triangles in vegetable-dyed silk from ashley on the west coast, and a knitted square from charlotte on the east coast. I received a gift of a knitted mesh square from my sister sarah, too

besides these full squares, I got my material from..

the quilt was originally handsewn by a family member many years ago. given this original creation, along with my recent work & love in it, I feel like its nearer to a creature than an inanimate object

Q. Favorite colors / prints?

This time of year I start to pull really pale colors: blues, whites and silver. I think the Pacific Northwest elements really makes me gravitate toward certain colors. Each season, my eye changes slightly.

Q. Visually inspired by...

Lately, landscapes. Especially Nordic landscapes. There's a designer and knitter, Steinunn Sigurdardottir who knits the Icelandic landscape into garments. And they're very unexpected. She knits hot springs and dirty snow and the textures left behind in the earth by volcanoes. I'm infatuated with her work because it is isn't obvious. It's very understated, yet incredibly complex. She manufactures moments in textile.

Q. Favorite designer(s), artists?

Well I usually get a lot more excited about materials and color schemes than designers in fashion. And then, it seems the garments that jump out at me as super brilliant tend to be menswear pieces. Kind of odd except my mum wore a lot of beautiful menswear. I am very interested in the independent designers emerging from backgrounds in fine arts or knitting or sculpture. I think this new wave of artists is really exciting.

Q. Favorite book / magazine / art piece?

I'm currently reading Grey Hope: The Persistence of Melancholy and I LOVE it. I think melancholy is such a part of the PNW and this collection of writings, paintings and photographs are so beautiful in their exploration. Also, I love BLOOM, the publication by Trend Tablet. They put things together in absolutely beautiful and tactile ways. I end up just looking at BLOOM for a long, long time. It's such a rarity these days for me to spend such a long time on one picture or one series of pictures and I appreciate that this publication really slows me down.

Q. Recent home inspiration / creative idea?

Right now a photography studio takes up most of our apartment. Very industrial-chic! My most creative idea is creating clean counter tops and more work space.

Q. Currently most excited about..

Getting older. Seriously. I'll probably kick myself for saying this but I feel such deep relief and joy being out of my teens and early 20's. ♦

Isabel Marant, Mayle, Acne, Apiece Apart, Rachel Comey, Vanessa Bruno and A Detacher. I'm drawn to effortless, elegant pieces that you can just pull over your head and walk out the door.

Ruth Asawa, Mark Borthwick, Ashley Helvey, and Sasha K. are my favorite artists.

Q. Favorite book / magazine / art piece?

I find so much inspiration in Japanese books. The photography and styling is always top notch; I just wish I could read the language. I love how their definition of beauty is understated and tied in with the importance of function. My favorite publications are JSBJ (jesuisunebandedejeunes), Ku:nel, Here and There, The Gentlewoman, and Diner Journal.

Q. Recent home inspiration / creative idea?

I came across images of hand dyed indigo asa fabric with overlapping oval patches of fabric stitched on top. It was the most beautiful, delicate thing I had ever seen. Since asa fabric is thin and slightly sheer, I thought it would make a lovely window covering. I'm hoping to come across a few pieces on ebay or at the flea market and patch one together.

Learning how to play the guitar. My sister used to be a guitarist in a band, so I'm hoping to pick up a few lessons from her. ♦

last week (or maybe two weeks now), we decided to saw off the large headboard we'd had on our bed frame. I didn't love the color of it, and it was too big.

a simplified platform bed made for various placement options. for now, we've moved it under the windows. we have such weak winter light here, and I thought it might help to be nearer to it in the morning

I also moved in a chair/lamp as a place to read before bed. its not really 'finished,' but I like the way this set-up feels. next, a pair of bedside tables..
