( woven )
I was able to add a little finished piece into the end of my sampler warp. The weft is made up (almost entirely) of scrap pieces of yarn- the exception is a few inches of nice angora homespun from cathy's shop
I also added in a few types of loose fiber- raw silk, buffalo fur, horsehair, qiviut, wool/tencel roving.. so within this one piece we have a little farm..
rabbit
sheep
goat
musk ox
buffalo
horse
alpaca

( shara )

sweet Shara, designer of Lotfi..
Q. Favorite colors / prints?
At the moment I really like light purple-y gray tones, pale pinks, burnt oranges, and deep reds. There was a Suno f/w 12 print that I thought was really great, it was this black and white print of all these animals and little children jumping rope. It looked a little Edward Gorey-ish, but not as dark. And one of my favorite prints of all time is the caravan print by Mociun. I have one of her dresses in that print, and it feels like wearing a piece of art.
Q. Visually inspired by…
Karla Black’s installations, a book I picked up about Frida Kahlo’s wardrobe, Vija Celmins, Shane McAdams' ball point pen paintings, and vintage pictures of the various moon landings.
Q. Favorite designer(s), artists?
Mociun, Shabd, Electric Feathers and Rachel Comey are some of my favorite designers. And I’m really looking forward to seeing the new Ermie, Ilana Kohn, and Wiksten spring collections. I love Bryan Shutmaat and Jennilee Marigomen's photographs, and I have this one tiny reproduction of a Simone Shubuck mixed media drawing that I tore out from a magazine and love. I can’t even find if she has a website or sells her work at all, but it’s just one of my favorite images.
Q. Favorite book / magazine / art piece?
My husband, Chris Koehler, just finished an ink portrait of Perfume Genius which I think really captures how beautiful and haunting his music is.
It’s always hard for me to pick just one book as my favorite. Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice are maybe the two books I have re-read the most over the years, so those would probably be among my favorite books of all time. On the completely opposite end of the spectrum, The Terror is one of my favorite Arctic thrillers (a category I may have just invented) ever. It’s based on a real expedition that went missing in 1845. So strange and riveting (I recommend reading it with some lemons handy, as there are some vivid descriptions of what scurvy will do to you). As far as magazines go, I love The Gentlewoman and The Believer.
Q. Recent home inspiration / creative idea?
I bought a somewhat rickety clothing rack at the Container Store a few months ago, and it’s really just not very pretty, so the thought occurred to me that I could just make my own. I saw this project online, I think on the Remodelista website, and it’s inspired me to try to do something similar.
Q. Currently most excited about..
Participating in a pop-up shop with Renee from Anaise! Some of the details are still being worked out, but it will definitely be in late April, in San Francisco, and there will be some very cool and talented designers/shop owners participating. I’m really thrilled to be part of such a great crowd. More details will be coming soon! ♦
